Label TextThis style of “Gouda” pottery was pioneered around 1898 by a company called Plateelbakkerij Zuid-Holland, or PZH. There is no such pottery known as Gouda, it is simply the area in Holland where several potteries are located. In 1910 PZH discovered a new process to produce matte glazed pottery. It was known as the Rhodian process, which is actually the name of one of the most popular decors PZH produced and became known as matte glazed pottery. Though they are not hand-thrown, but rather molded from a liquid clay, each one is hand painted. Strong Art Nouveau influence can be seen in each example of PZH bowls but they also bridge the abstract art pottery style of the Arts and Crafts Movement in Europe.
