Label TextEdward Hald was originally a painter and pottery designer from Stockholm, but in 1917 he joined Orrefors Glasbruk A-B, a leading glasshouse in Orrefors, Sweden, to pursue glassmaking. Hald was employed specifically to design new items, and his collaboration with Simon Gate at Orrefors created cased glass for which the Swedish factory became renowned.
This unique decanter was designed by Edward Hald and hand-etched for his nephew, Torsten Lagerstrom and new bride Edith as a wedding gift. The Lagerstroms were of Swedish nobility with a long history of naval service. Therefore, it was appropriate that Hald designed the decanter with seascape motifs. The musical verse on one side of the decanter represents a song that was sung by the family before venturing out to sea.
