Label TextThe Madonna and Child is one of Christianity's central icons. In most churches, images of venerated icons such as the Madonna and Child have visually contributed to the understanding of Christian beliefs and teachings. In Gothic and Renaissance Europe, the image of the seated Virgin Mary cradling the baby Jesus was popularized. This form of art is derived from images of the Egyptian deity Isis suckling or cradling Horus. For centuries, smaller versions of the Madonna and Child and Christ on the Cross have been utilized in homes for private devotionals.
