Label TextInspired by the success of Jackie Cougan, comedy producer Hal Roach realized the comic potential for a series featuring children. While interviewing youngsters for the roles, Roach became disappointed at the uninteresting stage auditions. During one audition he looked out the window and saw a group of children arguing over sticks in a lumber yard and decided to hire ordinary children for the roles. Most of his young cast had little or no acting experience and were hired for their spontaneity and all-American looks. Our Gang featured common childhood problems, fears, and dreams performed in a humorous context focusing on the child’s point of view. The idea captivated audiences from 1922 until 1944.
