Label TextMary Darling Koss (1912-1981) attended the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York, and also studied in Switzerland and at Vassar College. She married Richard Koss in 1933 and lived in Des Moines. The song "I Can't Give You Anyting But Love" was in the 1928 Broadway musical "Blackbirds" and was written by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields. The song must have been a new hit at the time when Darling made this etching for his teenage daughter who was coming home for the holidays. It most likely was, along with the print for John Darling "The Birth of a Great Idea", the first etching Darling made at his new etching studio at Peony Farm, whcih he bought in November 1928. Several of Darling's cartoons from the late 1920s were about the trevails of families who children come home from boarding school for the holidays.
