Label TextHeckman depicts the Hudson River lined with rows of cottages and buildings. The Hudson River is 315 miles long and stretches from Mt. Marcy in the Adirondack Mountains to the Upper Bay Area of New York City. The river forms part of the New York and New Jersey border. It is named after Henry Hudson who explored the region in 1609. The river has been an established trade route beginning with Native American and early Dutch traders. Also see Arnold Blanch's "Along the Hudson," 1934 in the exhibition. Heckman was born in Meadville, Pennsylvania in 1893. He studied at the Leipzig Institute of Graphic Art and Columbia University. He lived in New York City and spent his summers in Woodstock, New York.
