Label TextNext to basaltes, cane ware is the finest of the inexpensive and diverse Wedgwood dry bodies. The clay mixture contained Cornish Stone, producing a fine-grained body. Cane ware was crafted into decorative forms such as plant and bulb pots, however, the most common use was for tea wares. The bamboo motif was commonly used on cane ware, earning those objects the designation of bamboo ware. Although cane ware was sometimes enameled for decoration, the simpler relief ornamentation best illustrates its preferred characteristics. Modest treatment of the surfaces accentuates the texture of the body that is almost as smooth as jasper. This diminutive teapot features the bamboo motif modeled in the form of bamboo shoots. The austere unglazed exterior surface underscores the fine-grained texture and rich body color. Because it is intended as a utilitarian object, the teapot has a glazed interior.
