Label TextMarch follows the typical guidelines of Wood's agrarian pastoral scenes with gently rolling hills leading the eye to an isolated farmstead. Dormant fields await the growth of the forthcoming planting season. "The increased angularity of shape and composition suggests the forceful presence of the strong, biting winds. In March, the road no longer winds its way gracefully over the land but slashes in a z-form... from the foreground to the top of the picture, broken up by sharp wedges of dark gullies and ditches along the way. In the original drawing for the lithograph the road elbows treacherously to the right, all but disappearing before it angles toward the farm buildings above. Bare trees and bushes lean with the wind, and the banks bristle with last years weeds. In the finished drawing and final lithograph, however, the road and hills have been smoothed out and fence posts have replaced trees. The house and barn and a lone tree bend in distorted animation towad an Bentonesque team of wagon and driver who strain to reach their destination at the end of the road." (Dennis, James. Grant Wood. Columbia: University of Missouri Press, 1986. p 202).
