Label TextAfter London’s Great Exhibition of 1851, advocates of the Arts and Crafts movement disparaged ornate factory-made porcelain. Design reformers, such as William Morris, encouraged a return to pre-industrial production methods and inspired artists in other media to work in ceramics. “The first pieces of fine art pottery from Moorcroft were designed by William Moorcroft and launched into the world in 1897 whilst employed at James Macintyre & Co. William Moorcroft was a graduate of what is now the Royal College of Art in London, and the new art pottery was purchased strongly from the outset by such prestigious stores as Liberty of London, Harrods and Tiffany & Co. in New York. In 1913, Moorcroft opened his own factory in Cobridge and more than a century later it continues as a thriving business in the same location.” Source: moorecroft.com The Moorcroft bowl is in his rare Pomegranate design, was first produced by William in 1910 with a cobalt ground, and depicts hand painted pomegranates and berries in rich deep colors.
