Label TextA flock of bluebills wings its way over marsh grasses while two hunters crouch in the distance watching a lone bird. The copper plate is extant. Since wildlife did not have a vote, Darling figured it was up to the nation’s sportsmen to represent wildlife and natural resources. It became the hunters and fishermen of America who were its first effective conservationists. Darling believed many different conservation organizations that were founded in the 1930s were politically ineffective. Vowing to give them clout, he founded the National Wildlife Federation and served as its first President. The National Wildlife Federation now has millions of sportsmen and sportswomen members who speak forcefully for wildlife.
