Associated American Artists, Inc. issued this print with the artist's cooperation in an educational effort directed to bring about a greater public interest in an understanding for the work of contemporary American artists. Frank Nankivell, born in Maldon, Australia on November 16, 1869, studied art at Wesley College in Melbourne, Australia and in Japan from 1891 to 1894. From 1894 to 1896 Nankivell continued his studies in San Francisco and later studied portrait painting in New York City and London. His art consists of portraits, cityscapes, and children, and he created illustrations and etchings for Ladies' Home Journal. After moving to New York City in 1896, Nankivell began illustrating daily papers and joined the staff of Puck as a cartoonist and caricaturist. He published and illustrate the biweekly magazine Chic and also made drawings for the San Francisco Call, Examiner, and Chronicle. He was a member of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors and exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Salons of America. Frank Nankivell became well known as a brilliant satirist and caricaturist, during which time his fine art work as a painter and etcher received wide attention by the critics of the day.
