Label TextAs a member of Iowa State and Fish and Game Commisssion, Darling pushed for a statewide biological survey that would gather scientific data to help guide Commission policy. The survey, which became a national model, was conducted by Aldo Leopold, of the University of Wisconsin.
This print was made on a narrow gauge copper plate of the same dimensions, as can be seen from the shallow embossment of the plate marks on the two prints. Darling's use of line here is rather grid-like and mechanical in his drawing of the distant trees, while the water is rendered with a nervous, broken quality. The point of view is unusual for him, for he rarely has such a high horizon line, preferring to suggest expanses of water and marsh against a big empty sky by the use of a low viewpoint.
