Label TextThe Grumps ran for 42 years, beginning in 1917. The Creator of the strip, Sidney Smith, had been drawing Old Doc Yak for the Chicago Tribune. Its popularity resulted from the fact that it was one of the first continuity strips and it dealt with issues foremost in middle America’s mind. These themes included taxes, government waste, cost of living, food, and family life.
