Label TextOne of the founding members of Equitable Life Insurance Hoyt Sherman (1827–1904) had been a successful Des Moines area banker. He would become secretary of the new firm and his success in that position lead to his promotion to president in 1874. The effects of the Panic of 1873 derailed Sherman's career as Equitable's president though. Later in his life Sherman wrote articles on the early days of Des Moines and spent time socializing with surviving pioneers and Civil War veterans.
