Not on viewLabel TextIn about 1930 Darling made several etchings of canvasbacks that, as far as the drawings of the birds is concerned, were not terribly convincing. Now, in 1939, he returns to the subject in a far more interesting manner. This etching is related to two drawings by Darling of a similar site. One is entitled “The Old Muskrat House,” and it shows a similar landscape, with cattails and several birds in the water, and two birds landing. The other drawing is the study for this etching, done in ink over pencil. The plate began as a photo etching, but aquatint was applied to the broad areas to help hold the ink, and give it needed richness. Then drypoint was added on the canvasbacks’ bodies. An earlier state before drypoint is at the University of Iowa (UI 111). The copper plate is extant.
