Label TextBenjamin F. Allen (1829–1914) was an early Des Moines businessman who, among other things, was the director or president of insurance companies, railroads, banks, the gas company, various industrial firms, and even served a term in the state senate. Allen, who at the time was Iowa’s wealthiest citizen, was responsible for the construction of what is now the governor’s residence, Terrace Hill.
