Label TextIt was dedicated on January 21, 1926 by Governor John Hammill who unveiled and presented the bronze bust to Iowa State College Library, This is one of three made for the three state educational institutions and are identical castings of the work. In addition, a white marble version of it is in the governor's office in the State Capitol building. Larrabee was born in Connecticut and came to Iowa in 1853 at the age of 21(born Jan. 20, 1832 in Ledyard, Conn) were he taught school and ran a farm. He operated a flour mill in Clermont, Fayette County. He lost one eye as a child. In 1867 he was elected to the State senate and he held this position for 18 years. Elected Governor of Iowa in 1886 he was reelected for a second two year term and served through 1890. He was noted for his long working days, 20 hours, As Governor he warned the railroads against discrimination and exhorbitant rates. He wrote a book in 1893 titled "Railroad Question". His home "Montauk" in Clairmont is an Iowa State historic site. Larrabee died on November 16, 1912. He was a founder of the Iowa Republican Party and he invented a grain separator. He and his wife Ann had seven children.
